How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)

By Dr. Ryan Chaliff, DDS, MD (Columbia University), Co-Founder of BRITEN

The honest timeline

After a full whitening cycle (10-14 days of daily sessions with an LED kit), your results will hold for about 3-6 months without any maintenance. The exact duration depends on your habits. Heavy coffee drinkers and red wine drinkers will see faster regression. Water and white wine drinkers will hold their shade longer.

With simple maintenance (one touch-up session per week or two, plus smart stain prevention), results last indefinitely. I've had patients maintain their whitened shade for years with minimal effort.

What makes whitening fade

Your teeth re-stain from the outside in. The same things that caused the original staining will cause new staining:

  • High-stain foods and drinks: Coffee (biggest culprit), red wine, tea, berries, tomato sauce, curry, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce
  • Tobacco: Smoking and chewing tobacco cause deep, fast-setting stains
  • Poor oral hygiene: Plaque buildup accelerates surface staining
  • Age: Enamel thins naturally over time, exposing yellower dentin underneath. This is intrinsic and whitening addresses it.

The maintenance plan (10 minutes per week)

  • Weekly: One 10-minute LED whitening session to maintain your shade. Use the same kit from your initial treatment.
  • Daily: After coffee, wine, or dark foods, rinse with water within 10 minutes. This prevents surface stains from setting.
  • Monthly: Evaluate your shade. If you notice gradual darkening, do 2-3 consecutive daily sessions to reset. Then return to weekly maintenance.
  • Every 6 months: Professional dental cleaning removes tartar and surface stains that daily brushing misses. Whitening after a cleaning is more effective because you're starting with a clean surface.

The staining power ranking

Not all staining is equal. In my experience treating thousands of patients:

  • Heavy staining: Black coffee (multiple cups daily), smoking, chewing tobacco
  • Moderate staining: Red wine, black tea, berries, curry, tomato sauce
  • Light staining: Green tea, soda, fruit juice, soy sauce
  • Minimal staining: Water, milk, white wine, clear spirits

You don't need to give up coffee. You need to manage its contact time with your teeth. Drink through a straw when practical. Follow with water. Swish for 15 seconds after dark drinks. These small habits dramatically extend your whitening results.

Why BRITEN makes maintenance affordable

One BRITEN kit includes 60+ sessions. Your initial 10-day whitening uses 10 sessions. That leaves 50+ sessions for maintenance. At one session per week, a single kit covers nearly a year of maintenance. Refill gel pens keep the cost under $0.50 per touch-up.
